What is FAR's mission?FAR provides short-term emergency relief and implements long-term programs for the economic growth and social development of Armenia. It helps the most vulnerable segments of the population - the children and the elderly - and prepares professionals to lead their newly independent country.
Where is FAR located?Headquartered in New York, FAR has three offices in Armenia and Karabagh. In 2003, it began a new program to help the needy Armenian population in Javakh, Georgia. Some 97 percent of the organization's 153 full-time employees are located in the field - in Yerevan, Gyumri, Stepanakert, and other locations in Armenia.
What does FAR do?FAR caters its general relief and development programs to the changing needs of the people of Armenia. Currently, FAR concentrates its efforts on humanitarian aid, social and economic development, and educational and professional advancement. Since its inception, FAR has channeled more than $250 million in humanitarian assistance to Armenia.
Who is FAR affiliated with?FAR is an independent organization with no affiliations with Diasporan political parties. It has entered into collaborative arrangements with other Armenian relief organizations, such as the Lincy Foundation and Aznavour pour l'Armenie, in pursuing its mission.
When was FAR founded? In response to the devastating earthquake that struck Armenia in 1988, prominent members of the Armenian-American community founded FAR to provide emergency relief. In 1993, FAR was reorganized into a private voluntary organization and recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
How do I make a donation?Thank you for your interest in supporting FAR. Our work depends on voluntary contributions. Donations to FAR can be made through our secure online donation form (found in 'Support Armenia' section). Gift forms can also be sent to our New York office. To make a long-lasting impact on the lives of the people of Armenia, consider the advantages of planned giving.
How much money spent by FAR goes toward administrative costs? In 2002, the total FAR expenditure was $3.89 million. Of this, 89 percent was spent on its programs, nine percent went to management and administration, and two percent to fundraising.
Does Armenia still need help from the Diaspora?Yes! The Diaspora plays a tremendous role in helping to modernize the fledgling nation, still rising from the ashes of Soviet communism. Through FAR, Diasporan contributions have housed hundreds of families, fed hundreds of thousands more, and trained Armenia's next generation of professionals, scientists, and business leaders.
