On May 21, Armenia’s scientific community marked the beginning of another promising year with the launch of FAR’s Yervant Terzian Armenian National Science and Education Fund (ANSEF).
Held at the National Academy of Sciences, the awards ceremony brought together 59 exceptional scientists from 16 research teams. These researchers, supported by ANSEF grants, will pursue projects in 2025 across a wide spectrum of disciplines including biology, biotechnology, physics, archaeology, engineering, nanotechnology, biochemistry, and more.
“FAR implements a wide range of programs across Armenia, but science and its development remain a key priority,” said Bagrat Sargsyan, FAR Armenia Director. “Science is a stable and inspiring driving force behind our country’s progress. I am proud to see so many familiar faces, scientists who work tirelessly in this field, and thrilled to welcome new researchers who have joined our growing ANSEF family. This is a true cause for joy and motivation. It means we’re moving forward.”
This year, ANSEF’s Research Council selected 16 standout projects from a competitive pool of 129 applications. Among the recipients, 5 project leaders are under the age of 35 and 9 are women - an encouraging sign of growing youth and gender diversity in Armenia’s scientific landscape. Each selected team will receive a $7,500 grant to support their research efforts.
Congratulating the recipients, Eduard Karapetyan, FAR Education and Science Programs Director, emphasized ANSEF’s mission by quoting the late Dr. Yervant Terzian, a program co-founder: “The progress of science has always been and remains a vital factor in a country’s economic development, education, security, and cultural life. We must all strive to ensure Armenia is among those nations.”
Special awards were also presented in honor of influential figures like Dr. Aram Chobanian, Dr. Nerses Krikorian, and the Yeramyan Family, with a focus on fields such as biotechnology, nanotechnology, physics, and mechanical engineering.
Established 25 years ago to help retain scientific talent in Armenia, ANSEF has become a cornerstone in building a strong and resilient research ecosystem. To date, it has awarded 622 grants, totaling $3.2 million, and has supported 2,285 scientists, many of whom are now leaders and advocates for the advancement of science in Armenia.
