STEM subject-based learning recently took center stage at the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, where 30 educators from Armavir, Ararat, Vayots Dzor, Syunik, Tavush, Kotayk, Gegharkunik, Shirak, and Yerevan came together to strengthen their practical and theoretical skills in STEM education to inspire young minds across Armenia by bringing science to life in their classrooms.

Supported by FAR benefactors Ara and Valerie Cherchians, the From School to the Universe program was tailored specifically for teachers. Over seven days, participants explored telescopes, learned to navigate the night sky, experimented with interactive teaching methods, and attended lectures by leading Armenian scientists including Areg Mickaelian, Hovhannes Pikichyan, Hayk Malkhasyan, Artashes Mamyan, etc.

“This program is not just about teaching astronomy; it’s about empowering educators with the confidence and tools to spark scientific curiosity in every corner of Armenia,” said FAR’s Education and Science Programs Director, Eduard Karapetyan. “When we invest in educators, we invest in a future built on knowledge, discovery, and boundless possibility.”

“I came to arm myself with strength, knowledge, and energy. I gained new approaches and methods of teaching, exchanged experiences with friends and mentors. Now I believe I can bring the universe into my classroom, not as a far-off concept, but as something alive, something we can explore together,” shared Venera Mikayelyan, 48, a teacher from the border village of Hartashen in Syunik, for whom and many others, it was their first close encounter with professional-grade telescopes, research labs, and advanced technology.

We at FAR believe that empowering teachers inspires purposeful learning, shaping today’s students into tomorrow’s great minds. Let’s invest in that future together by donating to FAR today.
