FAR Helps to Build Local NGO's Capacity

Updated: Jan 14, 2023

The 22 professionals working for the Yerevan-based Prkutyun NGO recently attended a capacity-building training program as part of the Armenia Workforce Development Activity implemented by the Enterprise Incubator Foundation, in partnership with Armenian National Agrarian University, Fund of Armenian Relief and CIVITTA Armenia. This activity is made possible by the generous support of the American people through financial assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Prkutyun (salvation) has been providing daily care for young people with mental and physical disabilities, aged 16 and above, including psychological support and different therapies so that they won’t be neglected and/or end up in the street after school.

“Staff training and empowerment is so important for us because, frankly speaking, we’re not often provided with such an opportunity, and these seminars turn out to be a profound source for acquiring new skills and knowledge. The Golden Rule says that any such training enhances the skills and capabilities of a person,” said Prkutyun’s President Arpine Abrahamyan.

The training touched upon topics such as working strategies with persons with disabilities, conflicts, and strategies for overcoming them, independent living, and avoiding professional burnout.

Never Kareyan, the center psychologist and a trainer himself, found the workshops effective as they help the expert to learn and create his/her pool of methods when dealing with beneficiaries with mental disabilities. “I joined Prkutyun eight months ago, and within the scope of this program, I have held two seminars, one on conflict resolution, the other on unexpected situations that can happen with beneficiaries with disabilities. Both are very timely and important topics, as young people with mental disabilities may often create an unexpected situation in daily life, so we should be prepared. Training like this helps us acquire new methods in dealing with our beneficiaries, as well as orient and manage the situation faster than usual,” he said.
