At the Chinari Kindergarten in Armenia’s Tavush region, children are growing strong, thanks to daily nutritious, balanced meals that support their health, development, and well-being. Today, the kindergarten is a safe and joyful space for 21 children, including three who were forcibly displaced from Artsakh. With the shift to the summer menu, little ones now enjoy more seasonal fruits, fresh vegetables, and well-rounded meals full of the nutrients they need to thrive.
For 27-year-old Tatev Babayan, whose 5-year-old son Edgar attends the kindergarten, it has become a lifeline. Edgar struggled with both weight loss and emotional withdrawal during the nine-month blockade of Artsakh by Azerbaijan from December 2022 to September 2023. After their displacement, the family settled in Chinari, and Edgar soon started attending the kindergarten.
“Now, Edgar looks forward to each day,” says Tatev. “He plays, laughs, and eats well. At home, I can only make simple meals, some potatoes or pilaf, but here he gets food that really nourishes him. He comes home full and happy.”
Tatev’s two older daughters also attended the same kindergarten before moving on to school. For her, it’s a trusted place that has supported her family through an incredibly difficult time.
Parandzem Aghasyan, the kindergarten’s assistant principal, says the change began more than a decade ago. “Before FAR stepped in the region, we had only the basics, like tea, bread, and cheese. Meat was served maybe once or twice a month,” she recalls. “Now, our menu includes meat every day, seasonal vegetables, and fruits. The kids are not just eating better, they’re learning healthier habits. And it’s not just the children. The change has inspired the whole community even beyond Chinari,” says Parandzem adding that in a village where many parents work long hours in agriculture and don’t always have time to prepare meals, the kindergarten has become a place of comfort and care. Today, Edgar is a different child: active, healthy, drawing pictures, playing with his friends, and above all, thriving.
